I am not going to lie to you. There is a lot of confusion when it comes to artificial sweeteners. Are artificial sweeteners bad for you? Unfortunately, there are too many opposing articles and studies for me to say for sure; however, I will give you my opinion and you can decide for yourself. Not only will I give you my opinion, I will testing this theory on my own. I am going to be doing an experiment of my own. Why would I do this? It is simple, I believe that artificial sweeteners are not only bad for you, but I have come to believe that they can hinder weight loss as well. So, I have recently cut out all artificial sweeteners except for Splenda, which is made from sugar, from my diet. After reading some very compelling articles on the internet, and listening to what some biochemist had to say about these artificial sweeteners, I have decided to cut out all diet drinks and other artificially sweetened products. I have also cut out all caffeine from my diet as well. Now trust me, I am not one to go overboard, or to follow every whim. I thought long and hard about this. I am 33 years old, and I have been using these products all my life, and consequently I have been obese all my life too. I have decided that I don't have much to lose, other than the excess weight I have been carrying around all my life. I truly believe that with everything that I have learned about artificial sweeteners and caffeine that I will have great success. Think about it, if you had a multi-billion dollar industry built around a product that was bad for people, would you admit it? Would you fight off every attempt to expose the truth? Would you claim that every opposing article about your product was a myth? That having been said, here is some interesting information that has led to my decision to cut out artificial sweeteners from my diet. Dieting With Aspartame? In a cruel and ironic twist, aspartame may actually cause weight gain. Phenylalanine and aspartic acid, found in aspartame, stimulate the release of insulin. Rapid, strong spikes in insulin remove all glucose from the blood-stream and store it as fat. This can result in hypoglycemia and sugar cravings. Additionally, it has been demonstrated to inhibit carbohydrate induced synthesis of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which signals that the body is satiated. Inhibition of serotonin leads to food cravings, increased carbohydrate consumption and, ultimately, weight gain. In a recent study, a control group switching to an aspartame-free diet resulted in an average weight loss of 19 pounds. Again, please feel free to draw your own conclusion about artificial sweeteners; however, I am going to prove whether or not they have been working against me in my efforts to lose weight.
